‘Spectacular’, ‘Awesome’, ‘A Triumph!’ are just a few of the words that were used to describe the performances of Aladdin Jr last week. What a special time to be at Junior School Donvale.
The smiles on the children’s faces and the proud expressions on parents’ faces were a result of five months of learning and dedication. Our nine Attributes of a Positive Learner were in full use throughout the entire process.
Self-management: Knowledge, Courage, Resilience
From the time the Years 5 and 6 students submitted their videos in Term 1, through the audition process, lead selections, and throughout the dance, acting and singing sessions for everyone, the students have practised self-management. Understanding what was required of them, being prepared to explore an area that is outside many of their comfort zones and persevering throughout the entire process, they have all shown growth in this area.
Relationships: Communication, Connectedness, Collaboration
These attributes were evident throughout the last five months, especially in Term 3. Communication was key in understanding the movements of the group and the expectations as consultants and staff worked with the students. The year levels and leads respected the effort that everyone put into the individual aspects that eventually connected to produce a flowing and meaningful story. Teamwork was vital throughout the entire process, as groups collaborated and came together to produce a seamless performance.
Thinking: Reflection, Imagination, Curiosity
Reflection was an ongoing requirement throughout the sessions with the students reviewing footage from dance and acting sessions and adjusting their performance accordingly. They visualised and explored possibilities with movement, voice and costumes, and they asked thoughtful questions that assisted them in their understanding of the process.
Our production, which occurs every second year, is a source of learning that contributes to the children’s growth in many tangible and intangible ways.
Any question about the impact on the children were answered in assembly on Monday when they spontaneously burst into song, a magic moment for staff. It was interesting to connect with former Donvale students while we were at Kew last week and to hear them reminiscing about all the productions they had been in while attending Carey Donvale. I’m sure Aladdin Jr, which was a magical ride into a far-away land with high adventure, will be just such a positive memory for our current students.
