At Carey, we pride ourselves on providing a curriculum tailored to the interests and abilities of each student.
Carey is a positive and engaged community made up of our students, families, staff, alumni and friends whose connections extend far beyond the classroom. Together we are one – inspired by and dedicated to our shared responsibility for shaping the citizens of tomorrow.
We are committed to a complete education – an approach that values individuality and develops the whole person through a range of experiences and learning opportunities. We promote and embrace innovative thinking, creativity and collaboration.
At Carey, we believe that student wellbeing encompasses holistic social, emotional, spiritual, physical and academic components. We know that optimal wellbeing for students is when they possess a strong sense of self-efficacy, agency, purpose and belonging which enables them to flourish in school and in life. The interconnectedness of student wellbeing and learning are embedded in our policies, programs and practices, and fostered through positive everyday relational experiences.
We know that not all students are inspired by traditional academic pathways, but we motivate and encourage them to be the best they can be. We provide the pathways that allow students to thrive, including an inquiry-based approach in Junior School, over 50 elective subjects in Middle School, and IB and VCE in Senior School. As a result, Carey students achieve academic results that place them in the top students of the state.
Since 2021, we have been working with the University of Melbourne's assessment centre, Melbourne Metrics, as an early adopter in the New Metrics project to re-imagine school-based education by implementing seven Complex Competencies which cover the skills, attitudes and values that will enable learners to thrive: Agency in Learning, Acting Ethically, Active Citizenship, Collaboration, Communication, Personal Development and Quality Thinking. Integrating these competencies into our curriculum has provided more meaningful and accurate measures of our students' personal development within and beyond school.
Throughout the learning journey at Carey, community service and social justice make up an important part of student growth. Through connections with refugee communities, Indigenous communities and a huge array of charitable organisations, our students learn to view the world through a diverse range of perspectives and understand their responsibility to give back to their local and global communities.
