This voluntary role embodies several of our Complex Competencies, including Active Citizenship, Agency in Learning, Communication, Collaboration and Personal Development. While it might seem routine, the dedication and enthusiasm these students bring to this task are truly extraordinary.
Twice a term, the Admissions team sends out a call for volunteers to guide prospective families through our school on Open Mornings. Without fail, the response is overwhelming from our Middle Schoolers. Heads of House are inundated with eager students, ready to step up and represent Carey. While we often limit participation to specific year levels, the interest is so high that we have to gently turn away volunteers, promising them future opportunities. This year, over 200 Middle School students have served as guides – an impressive figure representing more than a quarter of the entire cohort.
Once selected, the guides embark on a thoughtful preparation process. They attend a lunchtime training session where they learn how to confidently introduce themselves, communicate effectively, and share their authentic experiences as Carey students. Admissions staff and I provide guidance, but the students take ownership, often practising their tour notes at home to ensure they’re ready.
On the day of the event, these students arrive looking impeccable in their uniforms, ties perfectly knotted and smiles in place. As families gather, the magic begins. Working in pairs, the guides warmly approach their assigned groups, introducing themselves and leading engaging, informative tours. By the end of each session, the feedback from visitors is overwhelmingly positive – many comment on the students’ professionalism, friendliness and genuine passion for the School.

Watching this unfold each term is a privilege. It’s a reminder of the incredible talent, maturity and commitment our students bring to everything they do. While it may seem like just another day at Carey, the Open Morning Guides exemplify the spirit of our community and the power of our Complex Competencies in action.
