The students I’ve had the privilege to know are, at their core, incredibly kind. Like all teenagers, they can be a little spiky at times, but that’s part of the adolescent condition. What truly stands out to me is their care – care for each other, their families, our school and the wider community. Of course, They don’t always get things right, but when they stumble, they generally take responsibility, learn and grow into better versions of themselves – exactly what we hope for in young adults.
Contrary to the stereotypes we read of our graduates, they understand and value their Carey education. We’ve seen countless examples of Carey alumni going on to make significant positive contributions to the world. Our students know that their success has not come without sacrifice – whether from their teachers, parents or loved ones – and they are deeply grateful for the support they’ve received along the way.
Since the disruptions of 2020 and 2021, I’ve seen our Senior School students shape a school culture that’s more caring, respectful and kind. Of course, it’s not always perfect – being teenagers means there’s still some trial and error, and mistakes along the way – but their intent is genuine, and their growth is evident.
As we celebrate the Class of 2024, let’s honour who they are right now and the people they are becoming. They may not always receive front-page praise, but we know the truth about our Carey Year 12s: our young people care, they strive, and they are ready to leave their mark on the world. We are proud of them, and we thank the families, teachers and staff who have walked beside them on this journey.
Here’s to our Year 12 students – congratulations, and thank you for being part of the Carey story.
