Carey was excited with the introduction of 3x3 basketball as a summer sport this year. It was a fantastic way for students to participate in a fast and exciting basketball experience. Without the formalisation of 5x5 basketball, it meant friends could play together and teams revolved constantly, so that the mix of talent, height, skill, age and experience was constantly changing and flexible.
The rules were simple and are designed to involve everyone. This new game encouraged students’ decision making and their ability to dribble, shoot and pass. We played music on game night and had a fantastic group of referees managing the games and atmosphere.
Facilitating our first 3x3 basketball opened a gateway to a fun, quick, energetic format that allowed students to enjoy the game immediately. What was so exciting was there was no time to rest. When the game started, each player was involved, whether they were shooting, passing, rebounding or defending. Everyone was contributing and having fun which kept them engaged and entertained.
Year 10 student Jacqui (pictured below) said, ‘3x3 basketball has been a great opportunity for the senior year levels to collaborate, connect and communicate through sport. I’ve really enjoyed the experience, getting to know people from all different areas of the school. Being a co-ed sport, it was interesting to see how it would work, but with such a supportive and fun environment, both trainings and match nights are a blast.’
As coaching staff, we witnessed the positive physical interaction of a fast game that saw everyone shooting and moving, playing every aspect and, most importantly, enjoying the sport. It has been a great opportunity to try something new!
