In the past fortnight I have directed a parent, holding a glass bottle filled with chocolates, towards the Millikan building where she would celebrate her son completing his final Year 12 exam. I also sat in a Year 9 final assembly, farewelling the students as they prepared to depart on an amazing three-week immersive program to close off their time in Middle School. November is also a time when the School invites the arrival of a number of new students. Earlier this week, Year 6 students from nearby primary schools, joining Carey in 2024, engaged in a series of after school games designed to build connections.
It is a time of the year where we begin to recall all of those great moments across all sections of Carey, although my personal highlight was my much-anticipated lunch with Year 3 students. Having received my invitation in the first week of this term, I was excited to join the Year 3 students and their parents at Kew for a three-course meal they had prepared in their Kitchen Garden program. It is a remarkable program with students at the centre: they pick the food from the garden, they prepare in the kitchen, they design the menu, they wait the tables and they make all announcements to the staff and parents who can enjoy the company of each other over the lunchtime feast. Read more about it here.
The weeks leading into Christmas become a season of celebrations, acknowledging what has been achieved by so many over the year. Yet it is also a time where new pathways are created that enable a healthy transition for those moving school section.
