Congratulations to Year 12 student Mia Kendall, who was drafted to Melbourne Football Club this week!
As the Melbourne Football Club website explains, 'The Dees have added some depth to their backline, securing the talents of Mietta Kendall with pick No.41.
'Kendall is a hybrid defender with a powerful kick, and at just 18 years of age, has the potential to develop into an inside midfielder.
'She’s no stranger to competing under pressure with a background in both hockey and karate, so expect to see her compete well for the Demons in the coming years.'
Mia is one of Carey's Sport Captains this year along with Joel, and they have both been integral in keeping spirits high throughout the school closures through their active involvement in Carey TV, encouraging their peers to stay active and interviewing notable sporting Carey alumni.
Mia is also a member of Carey's Pride Group and is a founding member of the new Social Justice Action Group and Reconcillation Action Program.
Her social awareness, work ethic and drive to make a difference all contributed to Mia's recognition in Term 3 as one of only six student finalists in the state for the VCE Leadership Awards in 2020. This annual award recognises outstanding VCE students who are leading positive change in their communities. Mia's nomination for the VCE Leadership Awards explains that Mia 'has a strong sense of social justice and aims to raise awareness of issues that affect those in her school and the broader community.' The nomination also cites her addressing complex issues including gender identity, racial discrimination and self-confidence as an important show of leadership at the Carey Poetry Night and the Out Loud poetry competition, along with fellow Year 12 student Rhianna Senn.
We are incredibly proud of Mia, and we can't wait to follow her career with Melbourne Football Club.
