On Sunday I had the great privilege to attend the Fullard House Chapel in the Memorial Great Hall. It was wonderful to be with my children, one of whom is in Year 12, and reflect on how great it is to be able to gather together with others again. At the service, the Fullard students from both Middle and Senior School, together with their Heads of House, Jacki Magee and Walter Zavattiero, established the theme of imagination. A particular highlight was Year 12 student Lily Munroe’s performance of ‘Pure Imagination’ from the 1971 film Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.
The guest speaker from the organisation Alex Makes Meals, Alex Dekker, spoke about being responsible for over 150,000 meals during Melbourne’s 2020 lockdown. Starting with the desire to ensure his own sister was eating well while working on the frontline of COVID-19 as a doctor, it soon grew into a movement of volunteers offering food, their time and their kitchens that now is feeding international students, homeless Melbournians and those impacted by domestic violence.
Alex’s work is truly a perfect reminder of Jesus’s message in John chapter 13, where He encourages people to imagine a form of leadership that puts aside personal agenda and seeks to serve others.
What did you wear in lockdown?
To mark the first anniversary of Carey going into lockdown, Carey Middle School will be running a Casual Clothes Day on Tuesday 9 March, where those participating will be invited to wear what they wore most in lockdown.
We have asked students to make a $5 donation and funds raised will go towards supporting our two World Vision sponsor children and a project developed by Tue Nguyen to help a person who suffered a catastrophic injury in Vietnam (pictured).
Finally, may the following prayer from the Fullard House Chapel shape our decision making this week.
Let us pray. Loving God dismiss us with your peace. Where there is discouragement, may we sow hope. Where there is suffering, let us sow compassion. Where there is hatred and prejudice, let us sow love. We ask these things in the name of the Father who guides us, Son who inspires us and the Holy Spirit who comforts us. One God now and forever. Amen
