Sometimes what we see, we pass by; not because we are heartless but because we may not know the first step that is required. However, there is always a first step, something actionable, tangible. In the spirit of becoming a change agent, the Year 6 teaching team empowered their students across the term to see, reflect and act thoughtfully to a community need. It is true that, ‘We can change the world and make it a better place. It is in our hands to make a difference.’ – Nelson Mandala.

A reflection from Year 6 educator Kimberley Markogiannakis
This term the Year 6 cohort learnt about the significant impact that Leadership of Service has in addressing the real needs of others. Their inquiry unit Care in Action developed their ability to lead with empathy and acts of meaningful service.
In partnership with 1000 Generations, an organisation dedicated to breaking the cycle of generational poverty, the students discovered an opportunity to make a tangible difference. 1000 Generation runs a breakfast club for children and families in the Brimbank and Hume areas, providing essential support during the school year. However, the breakfast club doesn’t operate during school holidays, leaving these families without this critical resource.
Recognising this gap, our students developed a creative and compassionate solution: Boredom Buster Boxes. These boxes were filled with non-perishable food items, hygiene supplies and engaging activities to support families during the holidays.
To bring their idea to life, the students took the initiative to write persuasive letters to various companies, seeking donations. Their efforts did not go unrecognised, and they successfully gathered over 3000 items! With donations in hand, the students faced the challenge of organising and packing the boxes. They worked collaboratively to ensure that each box contained a variety of items and was of equal value. The students listened to one another, co-ordinated their efforts and ensured that the families in need would receive their Boredom Buster Boxes in time for the holidays.
We are incredibly proud of our Year 6 students for their dedication, compassion and leadership. Through this project, they have not only learnt valuable skills but have also made a meaningful impact on their community.
