While our world is consumed with the COVID–19 pandemic, it can be difficult to try to maintain something of a normal routine, while also keeping sight of the range of other important issues that have taken a back seat to the media headlines.

One such area is the sustainability and health of our planet. While our increased community efforts to become more sustainable have been less prominent as our focus is drawn to the fallout of the pandemic, there has been talk of ‘silver linings’ and the potential short-term environmental benefits that are emerging from the crisis. From a dramatic decrease in flights internationally to a drop in global emissions and widespread improvements in air and water quality, the crisis has been something of a disruptor to how we live our lives and how we treat our planet. Now is the time for us to rethink how we do things going forward and take some of the learnings from this period to enable us to be more purposeful and effective in our efforts to become more sustainable.

Sustainability has always been a key focus at Carey. In the past year in Community Engagement, we have moved 90 per cent of our marketing documentation from print to digital flip books, housed on our website. We have moved away from non-recyclable bags and other merchandise, and we have stopped using plastic mailing bags.

This year, we will be making a significant move towards the digital distribution of the Torch, starting with our upcoming August edition. Carey families are encouraged to take up this option which will be in the form of a digital flip book delivered to you by an emailed link.
