Class Structure

<p><strong><strong>How big are the classes?</strong></strong></p>
<p>Donvale<em> -</em>The average class size is 18 students.<br />Kew<em> - </em>The average class size is between 23 and 26 students</p>

<p> Donvale - Two classes per year level.<br />Kew - Prep to Year 4: Three classes per year level. Year 5 and Year 6: Four classes per year level.</p>

Academic Program

<p><strong>Are there any specialist classes? </strong> </p>
<p>Aside from daily literacy and numeracy sessions, students also have specialist lessons in Art, Music, Chinese (Mandarin), PE, Library, Integrated Studies (Humanities, Physical, Personal and Social Learning) and CARE (Community and Religious Education). </p>

<p><strong><strong>What is your </strong>school’s approach to talent development? </strong></p>
<p>Talent development is primarily delivered within curriculum programs at Carey. It is designed to provide extension activities to students within their individual areas of talent while allowing them to maintain curiosity, creativity and motivation by fostering their skills in thinking and research. </p>

<p><strong>What is your school’s approach to learning development? </strong> </p>
<p>Learning Development staff and allied educators cater for children who are identified as having special learning needs. This includes students who have difficulties with their learning, including issues with literacy, numeracy and organisational issues. </p>
<p>Individual Learning Plans are created, with clearly defined learning goals where appropriate. Learning Development teachers meet with classroom teachers weekly to plan for the needs of all students, including those with special needs. </p>

<p><strong>What languages are offered?</strong> </p>
<p>Chinese (Mandarin) is a compulsory language taught from Prep. From Year 7 onwards children also have the choice to learn French or Indonesian. </p>

<p><strong>Is there religious education program in Junior School? </strong> </p>
<p>The Junior School, Middle School and Senior School all have their own school Chaplain who provides religious education. Children learn about Christianity as well as other faiths. There is a strong focus within these classes on social justice, community outreach and charity. </p>

Co-curricular and Sport

<p><strong>What camps are offered?</strong><br /></p>
<p>Students attend a range of camps during their Junior School years. </p>

<p>Year 3: Overnight camp at Portsea. </p>
<p>Year 4: Two-night camp at Mount Evelyn. </p>
<p>Year 5: There are two camps in Year 5. A trip to Sovereign Hill in Ballarat and an Outdoor Education camp at our Toonallook campus on the Gippsland Lakes. </p>
<p>Year 6: There are two camps in Year 6. An Outdoor Education camp at our Toonallook campus on the Gippsland Lakes and a trip to Canberra. </p>

<p><strong>Does Carey offer international school tours or exchanges? </strong></p>
<p>Carey has a close relationship with an Indigenous community in the Northern Territory. All Year 6 students are invited to apply for participation to be involved in an exchange program with students from the Robinson River School in NT. </p>
<p>Every second year, our Junior School also runs a 10-day cultural tour to China. Year 5 and 6 students can apply to participate in this tour which visits Beijing, Xian and Hangzhou. </p>

<p><strong>Can children learn an instrument? </strong></p>
<p>The Carey music program offers a wide and inclusive music education and includes various kinds of instruments for students to learn. Families can also request additional private instrumental classes with extra fees. </p>

<p><strong>Do you have musical productions? </strong></p>
<p>Students at Junior School Donvale collaborate to develop and perform in a musical production every two years. </p>

<p><strong>What is APS sport and is it compulsory? </strong></p>
<p>Associated Public Schools of Victoria (APS) is an association of independent schools that participate in friendly competitive sporting programs. </p>
<p>APS participation is compulsory for students in Years 5 and 6. It is held during school hours and no parent involvement is required. From Year 7, APS sport is held on Saturdays and parents are expected to drive their children to competitions. </p>

<p><strong>What types of sports can you choose from in APS? </strong></p>
<p>Typical Junior School APS sport options include Basketball, Tennis, Soccer, Volleyball, Netball, Swimming, Badminton, Touch Footy, AFL Football, Cross Country, Cricket and Dance Aerobics. </p>

Transport and Locality

<p><strong>Are there any bus facilities between Donvale and Kew campuses?</strong><br /></p>
<p>A bus between Donvale and Kew campuses is operated by Transdev. This service is convenient for our Year 6 graduates who transition to Year 7 at Kew. </p>
<p>Junior School Donvale also provides a free bus service for students attending their campus, with two routes available. </p>

General

<p><strong>What are your intake years at ELC and Junior School levels?</strong> </p>
<p>Our main entry levels for the Junior School are 3-year-old ELC, Prep and Year 5. </p>

<p><strong>Can I transfer my child from one Junior School campus to the other?</strong> </p>
<p>No. Transfer of enrolment between Junior School campuses is not available. Students completing Year 6 at our Donvale and Kew campuses will gain automatic entry into the Kew Middle School for Year 7. </p>

<p><strong>What time does the school day start and finish?</strong> </p>
<p><strong>Donvale <br /></strong>Prep to Year 2: School starts at 8.25am and finishes at 3.15pm <br />Year 3 to Year 6: School starts at 8.25am and finishes at 3.30pm </p>
<p><strong>Kew </strong><br />Prep to Year 6: School starts at 8.30am and finishes at 3.15pm </p>

<p><strong>Does the school provide before and after school care?</strong> </p>
<p><strong>Donvale</strong><br />Donvale campus offers after school care until 6.00pm and is available for all students beginning at 4-year-old ELC. This program is provided by <a href="https://www.oshclub.com.au/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">OSHClub</a>. </p>
<p><strong>Kew</strong><br />Kew campus offers a before school care program in our ELC from 7.45am and an afterschool program until 6.00pm for both the ELC and Junior School. The after-school care program is provided by <a href="https://www.oshclub.com.au/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">OSHClub</a>. </p>

<p><strong>Does Carey have onsite holiday programs during school holidays or is the School closed? </strong></p>
<p>The School is closed each term break. Families wanting to enrol their children into school holiday programs will need to do so through an external provider. </p>
