Build confidence and enhance leadership skills.

Debating and Public Speaking
Debating and Public Speaking

At Carey, we encourage students to participate in activities that extend their skills and prepare them for life beyond school. Becoming comfortable with speaking in front of an audience builds confidence, increases resilience and enhances leadership skills that are in high demand for many careers.

Carey has reputation for being a school whose students are strong competitive debaters and public speakers. Our teams have won many finals and we have had several representatives in the Australian Debating Team over the years.

Debating

Our teams are entered into the Debaters Association of Victoria (DAV) Schools Competition which encompasses A-grade teams (Year 12) to D-grade teams (Middle School).

We have a Chinese Debating Team that competes in state, national and international competitions. We regularly make the finals in these competitions and won the World High School Chinese Debating Championship in 2019.

House Debating is also an entertaining and fiercely contested feature of the House Cup Competition in Middle and Senior School each year.

Public Speaking

Carey participates in a range of public speaking competitions such as the Bond University Mooting Competition, VCAA Plain Speaking Competition and the United Nations Youth Association Competitions.
